Remembering Songwriter Adam Schlesinger

Last week, the world lost one of the great songwriters of a generation. And I lost a lifelong friend. Adam Schlesinger passed away from the coronavirus at the age of 52. Having known Adam since he was three months old, I can safely say he was the most talented, funniest, friendliest, smartest person I ever had the good fortune to know.

When we were kids, I’d visit him in New Jersey to hang out, write songs, and listen to music. At the end of our “play dates”, we would hide him in my parents’ car, hoping that nobody would notice and that we’d “accidentally” take him home with us. Even as adults, I always got a little sad when our time together would come to an end, knowing I might not see him for a while.

Although I’ll never see Adam again, I’ll still hide him in my heart, hoping my parents don’t notice.

Adam named this podcast. He was always great at coming up with clever names so when I decided to do a podcast, I asked him to think of a few catchy titles. I loved Write About Now, and now it will forever remind me of my friend.

We recorded this episode back in 2017 in his dining room in Silver Lake. The sound quality is not great—sorry, it was one of my first episodes and I was still trying to figure everything out. But I think the content perfectly captures who Adam was and how he thought about the creative process.

My thoughts go out to Adam’s beautiful daughters, his parents and sister, his girlfriend Alexis, our best friend Jeremy, and all those who loved him as much as I did. Adam was simply the best, and there will never ever be another like him.

You can find my tribute here.
